Dear Nabnasset Parents,
Each year the Westford PTO presents the Nabnasset students grades K-2 with cultural arts, science, social studies, and literacy programs. These are collectively referred to as ìEnrichment.î Enrichment is a priority for the PTO, and requires a large percentage of the fundraising dollars earned each year. Age appropriate programs are chosen by the school staff and are based on the curriculum.
The enrichment team, a group of PTO volunteers, researches and previews various artists, authors, musicians and science programs to select the finest programs. Susan DuBois and her staff make the final selection. The programs are a wonderful way to compliment concepts your child is learning in the classroom. For example, the first graders have a ìwriterís workshop.î To compliment that, they will meet an author of a book they are studying, find out what it is like to be an author, and learn about how the book was made from start to finish. Please take a look and find out what exciting programs are coming to your school. When your child sees one of these programs, ask what they thought of it!
Kindergarten
Rhythm Kids:
Tom and Dan Foote, brothers who now teach at Berkeley College of music, bring their enthusiasm and infectious love for drumming to the Kindergartners. Using the sounds of percussion instruments, they take the children on an imaginary trip into the rainforest of Ghana. In a village style circle, each child gets to sit on their own authentic African drum as they learn traditional African rhythms. First Grade
Emilie Boon:
Childrenís author and illustrator Emilie Boon, whose books include ìBelindaís Balloon,î ìA Bun for Barneyî and ìMommy Can You Play with Me?î will be returning this year to share with students what it is like to be an author. She talks about her inspiration, making mistakes, and editing her work. She shows students her books in the various stages of productions. At the end of her presentation, the children create their own mini books using her crayon and watercolor technique. Visit www.emilieboon.com to learn more.
Jim Parks, Wingmaster Birds of Prey:
This presentation, which incorporates five live birds, gives an overview of the different categories of birds of prey. The program is designed to explain the birds' place at the top of the food web, their different hunting adaptations and their status in a rapidly changing world. Terry Casey, Meteorologist:
Local Meteorologist and Westford resident, Terry Casey, presents an educational look at weather while also sharing some fun facts too. ~Topics of discussion will include clouds, temperature, daily weather patterns, weather forecasting, and the wind and how it changes and moves storms.
Second Grade
A Day in Ghana:
Vida & Joe Galeota take the students for an exciting journey to Aburi, a Ghanaian village in West Africa. Their travels focus on a typical day in family and social life, schooling, music, dance and storytelling. Students join in group songs, games and stories.
Hellen Keller:
From the Historical Perspectives for Children. This is a "We make history come alive program".
Strings Concert:
The entire second grade gets a special visit and performance from the Abbot School Orchestra. This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce the second graders to the orchestra and the types of instruments available through the third grade strings program.
